About Utah Home Hardening

A local network for a state that just changed the rules.

Why we exist

In 2025 Utah passed HB 48 — a law that designates High-Risk Wildland Urban Interface zones, assigns a Structure Exposure Score to every property in those zones, and creates a per-structure mitigation fee that's annual and recurring. In 2026 that same map became the basis for insurance underwriting decisions. Suddenly, tens of thousands of Salt Lake County homeowners need to make decisions about home hardening they never had to make before.

Most of those homeowners don't know who to hire. There are a handful of specialist contractors, a sprawl of tree services that bolt on "fire mitigation" as an upsell, and the perennial layer of national lead-aggregator sites that don't actually do the work. We built Utah Home Hardening to be the local-first connection point: one call, one assessment, one installer who's actually based in Utah and knows the Wasatch fuel profile, the local building departments, and which insurers in this market are tightening fastest.

How it works

  1. You request a free in-home assessment through this site or by phone.
  2. A vetted local installer walks your property, documents your current SES score against the State's criteria, and identifies the highest-leverage retrofits in priority order.
  3. You receive a written line-item quote in 48 hours.
  4. If you accept, your installer pulls permits, schedules work, and provides insurance-ready documentation when the project is done.
  5. If you don't, you keep the SES documentation and you're never billed. Zero pressure.

What we look for in installer partners

  • Locally owned and operated in Utah — physical shop, not a dispatch-only operation.
  • Crew trained in both defensible space and structural hardening (the two specialties don't always overlap).
  • Minimum 4.5-star average across Google and the Better Business Bureau.
  • Written warranty: minimum 1 year on workmanship, manufacturer warranty on hardware.
  • Permit-included pricing — no "permit fees extra" surprises.
  • Real service team for follow-up reassessments and next-season defensible space maintenance.

What you can expect from us

  • Honest scoring. An SES walk-through based on what the State criteria actually weight, not an inflated number designed to upsell.
  • Transparent pricing. Entry-tier retrofits in Salt Lake County typically run $2,000-$6,000. Full hardening on an older home, $10,000-$25,000. We tell you when bigger work is genuinely warranted and when it isn't.
  • Sequenced work. Most homeowners shouldn't spend $40,000 on day one. They should spend $4,000, get the SES score down, and decide what's worth doing next.
  • Insurance-ready documentation. Photos, materials specs, before/after SES mapping in the formats insurers actually accept.
  • Local-first. Every installer in our network is based in Utah. Your install money stays in the valley.
